The Philippine blog-world is exploding with posts about the now-infamous Malu Fernandez and her articles in People Asia magazine and the Manila Today newspaper. Malu Fernandez fancies herself a jet-setter/socialite; the articles in question talk about her recent get-together in Greece and her horrifying experience flying economy class on Emirates Air. Below are excerpts from the People Asia magazine article: "However I forgot that the hub was in Dubai and the majority of the OFWs (overseas Filipino workers) were stationed there. The duty-free shop was overrun with Filipino workers selling cell phones and perfume. Meanwhile, I wanted to slash my wrist at the thought of being trapped in a plane with all of them. Of course, everyone in economy class was yelled at for having overweight hand-carries. Mine was 17 kg (ssshhhh!). That was all makeup and accessories I would never risk losing if my luggage ended up in the middle of the Sahara Desert." While I was on the plane (where the seats were so small I had bruises on my legs), my only consolation was the entertainment on the small flat screen in front of me. But it was busted, so I heaved a sigh, popped my sleeping pills and dozed off to the sounds of gum chewing and endless yelling of “HOY! Kumusta ka na? At taga sann ka? Domestic helper ka rin ba?” Translation: “Hey there? Where are you from? Are you a domestic helper as well?” I thought I had died and God had sent me to my very own private hell. On my way back, I had to bravely take the economy flight once more. This time I had already resigned myself to being trapped like a sardine in a sardine can with all these OFWs smelling of AXE and Charlie cologne while Jo Malone evaporated into thin air. All in all, it’s been a pretty good summer. Jetting from the Aegean Sea to the Pacific may sound a bit pretentious until you wake up in economy class smelling like air freshener."
The backlash from this article was inevitable. Malu Fernandez further decided to dig an even deeper hole for herself with her retort article in the Manila Today newspaper. “As I type this, I’d like you to know that it’s not about whining, complaining and bitching but just stating the facts. Just recently, I wrote a funny article in my magazine column and my friends thought it was hilarious. It was humorous and quite tongue-in-cheek, or at least I thought so, until the magazine got a few e-mails from people who didn’t get the meaning of my acerbic wit. The bottom line was just that I had offended the reader’s socioeconomic background. If any of these people actually read anything thicker then a magazine they would find it very funny. Most people don’t get the fact that they need bitches like me to shake up their world, otherwise their lives would be boring and mediocre. I obviously write for the a certain target audience and if what I write offends you, just stop reading. Although it may sound elitist to you the fact is this country is built on the foundation of haves, have-nots and wannabes. One group will never get the culture of the other. Although I could mention that it is easier to understand someone who has a lower socioeconomic background that would entail a whole other page and frankly I don’t want to be someone to bridge the gap between socioeconomic classes. I leave that to the politicians in my family who believe they can actually help. Now I seriously ask you, am I being a diva or are people around me just lacking in common sense? Perhaps it’s a little of both!”
My response to this hullabaloo: 1. Understanding wit and humor is not determined by your socio-economic class. There is nothing witty or funny about extreme elitism, discrimination and bigotry. She targeted a segment of society that does more for the Philippine economy than her entire existence. **Edited: Actually, the hands of one OFW does more for the country than this woman.** 2. Stating her opinions is not stating facts and she should not present them as such. As a published writer/columnist, she is entitled to her opinion but she shouldn’t defend them as “stating the facts”. There is nothing factual about what she said. Speaking of facts, below is a statement released by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, as reported by the Manila Times by Maricel Burgonio in February of 2006: Money sent home by the Philippines’ large overseas work force rose 19.4 percent from a year earlier to a record $12.8 billion in calendar 2006, the government bank said Friday. In a statement, Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas Gov. Amando M. Tetangco said December transfers alone surged 37.2 percent to $1.3 billion, also a monthly record. 3. Money does not buy you class. Malu Fernandez fancies her a socialite/jet-setter. But can you see the Lizzie Zobels, Betty Sys and Bella Yuchengcos of the Philippines writing something as irresponsible (and stupid) as what she wrote? Or “understanding her acerbic wit?” Um. No. 4. Dear People Asia Editors, Where art thou? Not only was the content of the article inflammatory, the writing style left much to be desired. If wit was what she was after, then maybe it is best that she read the work of Joel Stein who regularly contributes to TIME Magazine. Garfield has more wit than this woman. Tsaka, medyo hindi ata siya logical. How can she not risk losing her bag of make-up and accessories if all of her luggage is already in the Sahara Desert? O, sha , chance, she means that she will lug her 17kg bag of overpriced lipstick and ahbubot. It was a metaphor daw. *rolls eyes* 5. PMP. Or Protect Miss Piggy. There have been plenty of posts lately using Miss Piggy to insult Malu Fernandez. LEAVE HER ALONE! Kawawa naman si Miss Piggy. (See Miss Piggy Fernandez photo below from anitokid.blogspot.com)
I will support the movements to force the resignation of Malu Fernandez and the issuance of a formal apology from People Asia but I will also start a campaign to protect the name and reputation of Miss Piggy. She doesn't deserve to be associated with Malu Fernandez. I will represent her in court if I have to! Stop the Insanity. Save Miss Piggy. Oh no... since I'm not as rich as Malu Fernandez, do you think she'll understand my wit and sense of humor?
****Latest news as of Sept 2007: Malu Fernandez has resigned from both People Asia and Manila Standard though there are rumors that the latter publication will not be accepting her resignation. ****
 | kagey wrote on Aug 21, '07 thank you for posting this! we've been talking about this on another blog and to reiterate:
Dear Malu (no O), - To quote a caption from another magazine "You might have money, but you cant buy class honey." - If you're so loaded, why did you fly economy? I know several wealthy people who choose to save on the extra dollars and fly coach. But none of them bitch about it. - You claim to have written this for an audience that appreciates your tongue-in-cheek humor and acerbic wit. A readership base that knows how to enjoy something thicker than a magazine. Well, your use of the phrase "trapped like a sardine in a sardine can" is not exactly what I would call a great sample of your writing strength. - You should really be thankful your editors let you get away with this piece. (Calling on the People Asia editorial staff -- what the hell man?)

We've all said disparaging remarks about different segments of society or the work force. But the decent thing to do is not to generalize. Be careful of how you say things. | nagsulat siya ng ganyan kasi di siya marunong na tao. I agree with you, miayu. I don't believe in generalizing either. And her size, race, rest of her family and her social status shouldn't be condemned in a general manner. What she wrote was her choice and her responsibility. This blog post of mine is more about condemning this one woman's actions and choice of words. In an update: Hail the Power of the Blogger! Seems like non-traditional media and content mediums have the power: http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/topofthehour.aspx?StoryId=89652Malu Fernandez has resigned from People Asia and Manila Standard. |
 | declare malu fernandez persona non grata
Malu Fernandez’ recent public apology is too little and much too late. It was only when public outrage had swelled to tsunami-levels that Malu was compelled to write her apology. I recall that her first response to angry letters over her People Asia “From Boracay to Greece” story was another equally arrogant and insensitive column piece “Am I being a diva? Or do you lack common sense” in the Manila Standard. Instead of displaying “acerbic wit”, her stories were simply and blatantly insulting. Her comments about the OFWs in the economy class of her Emirates flight were hurtful and an affront to millions of OFWs, their families and dare we say – the entire Filipino people.
Malu Fernandez is unpatriotic. She should be declared Persona Non Grata.
Her Filipino citizenship should be wrenched from her being and passport should be revoked. Her treacherous body should be sentenced to roam the earth forever stateless. Maybe then she can truly internalize the great misery and pain countless overseas Filipinos must deal with daily – just because economic reasons compell them to stay abroad to earn a decent living for their families.
Along with being incensed at Malu and others who share her views, I also pity them because their pretentious illusions about their self-worth destines them to live a shallow, narrow and self-absorbed life. I am certain that already, their brains are being eaten by the immense amounts of bile their pompous attitude spews into their little heads.
To People Asia and the Manila Standard, public apologies to OFWs need to be offered by your publications. Although I am all for press freedom, there should also be a line drawn against degrading and discriminatory statements. Malu’s apology should be also be printed and her resignation accepted immediately.
For all the Filipinos out there who voiced their anger at Malu, bravo! I hope that we all continue to stand up and raise hell whenever and wherever the rights and welfare of OFWs are violated.
Para sa aking tatlong dakilang kapatid na OFW sa Dubai at iba pang ofw worldwide,

 | She's one naive unsophisticated bitch. She has poor writing skills. I've been working abroad for almost four years here in New York and previously in Singapore and I've also observed this kind of attitude with the PAL stewardesses who appear irated/ offended whenever they are serving Domestic Helpers who are riding PAL. What's the difference nga naman? Arent we all slaves? -only labeled as household and mine as corporate. Malu is just plain ignorant. |
 | That was so dumb and assshole hey Malu Fernandez get the hell out of this world, Get a life fat pig, before you criticize and say something rude to others... | Obviously Ms Baboy is a true blue social climber. She should have payed double in economy class because she takes up 2 seats! She must have created long lines in the loo because she unpacks such a big big load! But no matter how big her load is, it doesn't stink as much a she does! I think as Filipinos we should boycott People's Magazine and Manila Standard for allowing such bigotry to be printed in their publication. And Miss Baboy should be stripped of her Filipino citizenship and sent to Baboyan island for the rest of her life. |

 | the predicament she found herself could have been funny . hulluh: true-la-loo! wag tayo magmalinis diba? let's all admit that one point, we have done our own version of elitism (making fun of certain types of people, certain work segments, certain products, whatever).
i've actually rode in flights with a lot of OFWs and I have to admit that there are times when I am upset with how some of the passengers don't listen to the FA and end up disrupting operations of the flight. But many of them haven't been home in years, haven't been able to talk to fellow Pinoys in months and...well, excited sila.
As for the clapping....hehehe, aminado ako, nakiki-join ako diyan. Cute eh :-)
As for Ms. Fernandez, let's just say that I am satisfied with her resignation but I'll have to agree with the others that it would be nice if the publications put up an apology as well. As the "guardians" of the publication, they should've been more responsible. |

 | I think ms fernadez is just a simple ignorant who is trying to be funny (The ignorant way)!!! And trying to tell the readers that she’s elite and rich (Show-off!!)!!! I travel in an economy class as well and sometimes by business class if the company pays for them, syempre sayang! (kung gusto nyang magtipid and take the economy class, just shut up! Medyo malaki din ang built ko, at sometimes nakakapagud nga pag long journeys, lalo na pag puno ang plane!!! Pero ‘wag sana syang magsulat ng ganyan sa kapwa nya Pinoys!!! | as an OFW myself, I find her article very insulting. I sacrificed myself to be away from my family just to earn a decent living. clearly she doesn't know what she's talking about. I'm sure "politicians" in your family are one of those corrupt people and is the reason why the country is getting poorer and driving us "OFW- AXE/ Charlie cologne users" to leave the country. Mahiya ka sa mala chicharon mong balat! BABOY KA! GRRRRR!@#$%$^&^&*((()&^$ (excuse my language bloggers) |

 | Good thing she resigned already. I just got an email from my friend back home ...I am an OFW too , I am an english teacher in the southern part of Italy.... Most of my filipino friends here are DH and the italian people love us as workers. Here, there is dignity in our jobs. Sa totoo lang..Tayo lang namang Pilipino ang nag mamaliit sa mga OFW eh try going to POEA .How OFWs are treated...gulo dun....sad to say... anyway, This journalist is so pathetic. http://www.geocities.com/fernandez_malu/ ..now she is jobless...the best part is that she apologized. We just have to forgive her! |

 | Sa totoo lang..Tayo lang namang Pilipino ang nag mamaliit sa mga OFW eh try going to POEA . yenguccia: that's so true! but...but... in fairview, not all Pinoys are like that. I will never ever ever think of OFWs that way because of what they did for me and my family when we were traveling abroad.
The flight we were on was cancelled and since we were flying for free, we had no benefits such as free hotel and meals. But a group of female OFWs didn't know what to do next and looked confused. They approached my mom and she helped them out. They said, "Oy, when you're in Milan, come see us! Stay with us--wag kayo mag-hotel!" We exchanged phone numbers and went our separate ways.
My family and I didn't take it that seriously; Pinoys are super friendly but you're not sure just how real the offer is or not. Anyway, we were in Milan when we decided to give them a call to have dinner or lunch with them.
To make a long story short, they housed us for 3 days and 2 nights, never made us pay for the food we had at their house (we left money in an envelope on the dining table along with thank you notes) and toured us all over Milan.
Yan ang Pinoy hospitality!
And everywhere we traveled, we played, "Kababayan?" and happily enjoyed the company of our OFW compatriots. Everywhere we went, the kababayans would help us, take care of us and warn us (O, mag-ingat kayo sa simbahan! Maraming mandurukot diyan!
Eh ano kung DH? It's a job--a good job. Hell, they earn more than I do! |
 | The stupid thing about this is... While an OFW earns as much (or more) than Malu, they have nothing to show for it kasi nalalagay lahat ng pera for their families while this ingrata can spend hers on herself. |
 | This person is so ELITISTA. So much for you being on the social limelight and jetsetter circles. If Ms. Fernandez really is an educated person and a professional writer. Then she should be more TACTFUL of the articles she comes out with. Good thing she had resigned from Manila Standard and People Asia.
To Manila Standard and People Asia - I was wondering how an article like this was printed without your chief editor not noticing what Ms. Fernandez wrote. How irresponsible can your team get? |

Yeah, I understand that po.. what I meant was an OFW would look so "simple" and "insignificant in Malu's eyes because in her world every inch of her wealth can be seen dangling around her.. her clothes, her makeup, her jewelry... While a humble OFW would appear like that to her, Malu doesn't understand that it's because every bit of their money will go to their families and leave very little for themselves... |

 | linor34b wrote on Sep 2, '07, edited on Sep 3, '07 I am not defending Ms. Fernandez about her insulting commentaries, for she indeed, as a columnist, has the right to say whatever she has in her mind and be prepared to suffer the consequences. Perhaps this sad event gives as a pause and reflect and try to be more understanding to our fellow men/women's sensibilities. Ms. Fernandez, I think, just puts into writings what she hears from her elitist friends, who because of their status in our society, think they are far better than anyone else. The upper crust of our society should understand that these OFW's have been abroad for a long time and probably very eager to see their country and families. If they are boisterous and loud and talk about how much money they are taking back to their families, maybe they just want to prove that they are not losers just like what Ms. Fernandez thinks. When this group of people, who have similar experience are confined to the limiting space of an airplane, what would one expect them to talk about? The airline food?
Likewise, to my fellow OWF's, just because our government calls us "Heroes" (with a Wink, Wink, Wink) does not mean that everybody thinks we are heroes. If the government had a source of revenue that can fill the government coffer more than the OFW's can, our nationalist -politicians would be calling us traitors who abandoned the Philippines for the "Almighty Dollars".
Everybody has the right to criticize Ms. Fernandez's insensibility which she equates as an acerbic wit, but to threaten her life is something else. It is criminal. We should all take a deep breath and be more charitable and stop this name callings even if we think Ms. Fernandez looks like a domestic pet that was let loose too long in a cabbage farm. |
 | linor34b wrote on Sep 3, '07, edited on Sep 3, '07 P.S. No doubt, Ms. Fernandez has an acerbic wit and seems very intelligent. Her problem is that the taste might have deaden the part of her brain that controls common sense and decency. |

 | ming8 wrote on Sep 6, '07, edited on Sep 6, '07 Hey Cybele! (If this is the Cybele I know, but if not, sorry, had to add my two cents)
I just came from Bangkok. Stopped over on my way back to Laos from Phuket where I went on holiday with my fam, and I met up with some people who work there and this is when I first learned about the foolish and infamous malu.
Technically, any Filipino (half or not) that works overseas is an OFW. Therefore, anyone, in any social class, that works overseas is an OFW. It is HIGHLY unlikely that this girl doesn't have a friend that works overseas, so her friends should also feel insulted about her column. I dunno, baka this girl thinks she can get famous ala Paris Hilton sans sex video through all this hype, but I think she went over the edge.. yeah, we all like to make fun of other people. I admit this, I like to make lait, but like you said, not at serious expense of someone else, and not to people who don't attract the attention (I mean if you walk into 168 decked out in Prada, and complain about the 'heat' and the number of people around you, you ask for it.
But for the most part, yes, OFW remittances is the back bone of our country and these people only leave because they need better opportunities. And to disparage them is just totally below the belt.
How I really wouldn't mind meeting this girl malu.
And yeah, Save Ms. Piggy!
|
 | But for the most part, yes, OFW remittances is the back bone of our country and these people only leave because they need better opportunities. And to disparage them is just totally below the belt. MING!!! Oh my gas, you're a blast from the past!
True la loo! For the most part, a lot of these Filipinos who move abroad are looking for better opportunities, giving up a lot of Pinoy things just so they could send money back home for their families. Foul talaga what this Malu girl did.
Hehe, I personally would like to see her (not meet her, I might start giggling and mumbling to myself, "Stupid girl, stupid girl") but I doubt if she and I would ever be in the same social circle, hahaha!
I am strictly a Johnson's Baby Cologne (Regular and Bounce) kinda girl. So not Jo Malone.
Good to hear from you, Ming!!! *claps delightedly* |
 | ming8 wrote on Sep 6, '07, edited on Sep 6, '07 I knew it was you! I had a bit of trouble since your photo is you scowling/laughing whatever, but it resembles your ines face on the football field. ha ha ha!
Poor me, never tried Jo Malone, don't even know what it smells like..I guess I will never rub elbows with Malu. Naah, i wanna meet her, and talk to her, and see if she has a high pitched voice teeming with a know it all attitude with her nose up in the air, and have the opportunity to call her something rude...in an intelligent way ofcourse, to make sure that she doesn't understand and THEN we can all have an extra giggle. (gotta love the sardine in a sardine can..)
My J&J baby cologne is even more common than yours, the blue regular one...
And yeah, to an extent I am like any OFW. One thing I asked my mommy to bring to Phuket was Chicken Sotanghon of Lucky Me and Maggi Chicken noodles! |
 | Siyempre, when I checked out your blog I screamed (in my head lang cuz I'm at the office): "FOOTBALL!!!" Hehehe, it is my kinda ines face noh? But actually, that was our office ID. The graphic artist digitally added fangs (I was going through "I wanna be a vampire" phase).
Intellectual elitism! Hahaha, it is actually a very effective tool. Many a time it has been used on me (and used by me on ____ and ____ and ____....) I have this odd feeling I'd be disappointed to lay eyes on her. There is a certain air to the really rich...you just know that they're rich. Then there is that lot of rich but...sad.
I love J&J Blue Regular. Whenever I splash it on, I sing "Bagong ligo ang pakiramdam!" As for expensive colognes and perfumes, I would have no idea because I'm always the one backing away from the perfume section in department stores with my hands up while I say, "Don't spray me, don't spray me, augh you sprayed me...waaachoooo!"
I would loooove loooove looove to be in Phuket! I went there a few years ago when I was working in KL (took the train and the bus). It's such a pretty little place and I love the Thais. The guards at the border sang to me, "Dahil sa yoooooo.... You Filipino! We like Filipinos!" |
 | ming8 wrote on Sep 6, '07 Ha ha ha yeah! Football talaga! You still play?
Yeah, intellectual elitism..always a plus, and equally rude (or even more so) than just natural lait. But usually this is used on people who deserve it. You think it would be disappointing? Hmm maybe, but wait, is she really rich, like Zobel, Ayala, Ortigas, Sy, Tan rich? or just nuveau riche na feeling rich with her living room being the most spent on part of her house, because that is all that people see? You know there are a few people who are really seriously rich, that really don't act like snobby fools like this girl...
I love regular, but naah, sadly I don't sing that..will try it next time! ha ha ha..The expensive stuff, well, I have my fair share of the stuff, but I do try to avoid the shops that have the attendants peddling their wares. I mean I get it that its their job, but man, you can only really handle one scent at a time ya?
Phuket was nice, hey KL is nice too. And for the record, I have sister in Laws, one of which is married to one of the Princes of Malaysia, and you know what, they watch Pangako sa Yo religiously and always ask me questions about Jericho and Heart and Kristine! One has the biggest crush on John Lloyd Cruz (well, as a matter of fact so do I!!)
Now hows that for other people loving our stuff! Even rich people! ha ha ha Proudly Pinoy man! |
